Monica Huisman: Soprano Monica Huisman was born and raised in Winnipeg, MB. She received her operatic training at the University of Toronto, in the studio of Mary Morrison. Following her studies she continued with the Vancouver Opera Ensemble as resident soprano. She performed such roles as Gretel in Hansel and Gretel, Musetta in La Boheme, Mrs. Hayes in Susannah and Clorinda in La Cenerentola. Miss Huisman has been heard with the Winnipeg Symphony Orchestra, Edmonton Opera, Manitoba Opera, Vancouver Opera, Opera Saskatoon, Netherlands Promenade Orchestra, Debut Young Artists series as heard on the CBC, and has most recently made her debut in the famous Concertgebouw in Amsterdam peforming the opera 'Francesca da Rimini'. Awards include being regional finalist in the Metropolitan National Council auditions, first prize in the Debut Young Artists recital series, first prize in the Czech/Slovak competition in Montreal and most recently won an engagement of Musetta in La Boheme in Giessen, Germany, as part of the Jeunesse Ambassadeurs Lyriques. Upcoming engagements include the world premiere of The Batoche Opera, as part of the Saskatoon Symphony's New Music Festival, Strauss' Four Last Songs with the Saskatoon Symphony, Die Zauberflote with Opera Saskatoon, La Boheme with Opera Giessen, and Carmen with the Vancouver Opera. |
